Parents and Guardians of 8th Graders
September 2012
Dear parents and guardians,
Thank you very much for stopping by our website! I will try to keep this website updated with information about class as we go through the school year. Please check it when you think about it and contact me here if you have any questions.
Your student is taking Spanish 1B this year and I will meet with them every day for the first two trimesters of the school year. Students will expand on what they learned last year and will be able to communicate on a variety of different topics using the Spanish language. They will gain a greater understanding of and appreciation for different cultures and peoples; they will also get to experience different traditions and holidays from around the world.
It should be a fun year and I am excited to work with your student!
Sincerely,
Señorita Ray

Hello! Thank you so much for stopping by our class website to see what's going on in your child's Spanish class. You can visit this tab to see what we've been learning in class.
In the first trimester, your children refreshed their memories of what they learned in 7th grade Spanish. We reviewed greetings and basic questions (ie. What's your name? How are you? Where are you from? etc.), numbers, the alphabet, and how to tell time. We also moved into learning some grammar constructs of the Spanish language, including the subject pronouns (which in English are: I, you, he, she, we, they, and you guys) and the forms of the verb "ser" (which is the verb that means "to be," for example, "I am," "you are," etc.). Students can use the new adjectives that they learned in combination with different subject pronouns and "ser" to describe different people. Have them give it a try for you!
For the end of the trimester assessment, students did an oral quiz. This was new to them and it went very well. They came to me one by one and answered two questions in Spanish, showing me what they had learned and were able to do with Spanish since the beginning of the trimester. Students had all of the questions and answers to study from before-hand.
As we move into the 2nd trimester, we will learning more vocabulary and grammar so that students can actually use Spanish in every day situations.
Thanks for reading and I'll try to update this regularly! Please check out the "Extra Resources" tab to see what your student can do at home to further his/her practice of the Spanish language and the concepts learned in class.
